Who is Virtual Sobriety?

December 13th, 2024

Here I am. Sitting cross-legged at my desk in my apartment, writing my first blog post on my own website. Let me just start by saying thank you for taking the time to read this far. I know I’m only a few sentences in, but this is honestly a very surreal experience for me. So thank you, and welcome to my passion project.

Part of me wants to keep this brief and get to some kind of point, but hey, this

my blog! So I'm going to write all that I want and nothing more.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way now. Yes, I am sober and have been since November 2008. I won’t go into specifics here, but I haven’t used drugs or alcohol since then. Without my sobriety, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today. I owe my life to it, and it remains the most important part of who I am.

After getting clean, I spent the next 15 years of my life in the restaurant and catering businesses. From dishwashing to managing, I experienced everything these businesses had to offer. I loved the industry I was in. I loved the people I worked with and my many regulars. I made relationships that turned into lifelong friendships. But there was still a certain itch I just couldn’t scratch.

Since I first learned to crawl, I’ve always been a nerd. I loved video games, was obsessed with fantasy, and was fascinated by technology. I was always curious about the other side of technology but afraid to peel back the curtain. I worried that if I learned how things were made—if I started working in gaming, programming, or anything like that—I’d lose my favorite pastime. But when I started teaching myself how to code in November of 2023, I quickly learned just how wrong I was.

Fast forward to September of 2024, and I found myself quitting the restaurant business so I could fully focus on coding and move toward a new career. And that basically brings us to today: the day I’m finally ready to launch my first official website.

Well... here goes nothing. Welcome to the first look into My Virtual Sobriety. I hope you’ll stick around and join me on my journey. I plan to write more posts here—hopefully weekly—but we’ll see!

Until next time,

- Craig
